Community Engagement

SMC & SWC in the Community

Youth Ticket Program

Since it began in 1994, our groundbreaking Youth Ticket Program has provided cultural enrichment and positive and affirming representation for self-identified gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender and gender non-conforming youth and their allies thanks to thousands of donor-sponsored tickets. In addition to free and deeply discounted access to concerts, our donors also underwrite free bus transportation for schools and youth groups outside the metro Seattle area. SMC and SWC concerts are a life-changing opportunity to open up the world of choral music to a new generation and provide a safe and accepting space to engage with the LGBTQ community.

We are partnering with the experts at TeenTix to manage ticket requests. The choruses are happy to introduce teens to this nonprofit that, in addition to our free performances, provides $5 ticket access to dozens of arts organizations in the Seattle area.

To receive free tickets for our concerts, sign up for TeenTix (ages 13-19) and watch for their ticket alerts through email and social media.

Washington Middle School Residency

This program is not currently being held due to impact from Covid-19. We look forward to continuing our residency with Washington Middle School in the future.

For three years, our annual residency at Seattle’s Washington Middle School became a centerpiece of Seattle Choruses Youth Engagement work. Formed in partnership with Seattle Public Schools Visual and Performing Arts staff, the pilot project evolved into a collaboration with the WMS choir and music staff.

Led by Artistic Director Paul Caldwell, SMC and SWC singers joined the school choir for a six week residency, allowing us to provide musical mentorship while sharing our mission of inclusion and justice. We have learned that many students today still face bullying and messages of hate as part of their daily experience.  Many SWC and SMC singers experienced bullying as young people themselves, and through this program were able to serve as role models for the power of the arts to strengthen self-esteem and be a safe and affirming space. The resulting intergenerational choir was been featured on stage at McCaw Hall for cheering audiences of parents, peers, and chorus fans.

Non-Profit & Community Partners

SWC/SMC continues its extensive support of other non-profit organizations advancing LGBTQ, arts, and social justice causes. We have been proud to collaborate with many partners including Lifelong, Companis, GSBA, Diverse Harmony, PFLAG, GLSEN, GALA Choruses, the Greater Seattle Choral Consortium, and more.
