During the past two seasons, singers from SMC and SWC have participated in a six-week residency with the choir at Washington Middle School, forming an inter-generational chorus that has performed for you and Seattle families at McCaw Hall. For our third year, we are expanding our commitment to the school, providing the students with a singularly unique and special opportunity.

This week we bring composer Jim Papoulis to do a songwriting workshop with the students. Jim is a prolific composer of choral music for young voices. Published by Hal Leonard, much of his music is created in collaboration with youth choruses. In workshop settings, Jim elicits thoughts from young people about things that matter to them. In a safe forum, free of judgment, he asks probing questions about their thoughts and fears and hopes. Out of this, a new song unfolds. Jim has done this with countless choruses – often in the aftermath of tragedies – and the result is always healing. The completed songs are subsequently published by Hal Leonard, with the collaborating school credited on the sheet music.

The song that is created with Washington Middle School with be premiered at SMC's Believe: The Music of Cher, at McCaw Hall on March 31.
