The season opening concert, Unveiled, features rich and varied music of all kinds from across the globe. These seven soloists have the honor of performing with the support of 150 singers behind them in the beautiful Saint Mark's Cathedral.
We may know their voices, but to learn more about them we asked three questions.
Betsy Bruce ("Being Alive")
Your best Halloween memory from childhood? Making my brother do his "trick" when asked while trick or treating. He was very chubby but nimble so his trick was a surprisingly graceful somersault. And I acted as the "manager" to his "talent."
Who would win in a sing off - Lady Gaga vs. Cher vs. Christina Aguilera? Lady Gaga every.single.time. The woman is a diva with the talent to back it up and a huge heart. I love her and have been to every one of her local concerts. She inspires me.
Why did you join SWC? To sing, of course. But inadvertently I got a family full of wonderful friends who take care of each other. I found the tribe I didn't even know I was looking for.
Amber Wogoman ("No Time")
What’s your favorite song in Unveiled and why? "Beautiful" is one of my favorite songs period!
Who would win in a sing off - Lady Gaga vs. Cher vs. Christina Aguilera? The audience. The audience would win.
Passionate about any activities/groups/hobbies outside of SWC? I podcast with an international group of lovely nerds (Vassals of Kingsgrave) about all things pop culture, viewed through the lens of George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Like I said, nerdy!
Lisa Brown ("Proud")
What’s your favorite song in Unveiled and why? As always happens, my favorite song in this concert has changed many times throughout the rehearsal period. My current favorite is "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" but you might want to ask me again next week.
Your best Halloween memory from childhood? The time I went to the Masquerade Dance at my high school dressed as a jack-o-lantern (complete with blacked-out teeth and scary grin). It was expected that I would always wake my mom when I came home late so she wouldn't worry about me. You should have seen her face that night as I gently shook her shoulder to wake her up and let her know I was home.
Why did you join SWC? I joined SWC so that I would have a safe place to sing after being told I couldn't sing in church because of my sexual orientation.
Evan Farnsworth ("Media Vita")
What’s your favorite song in Unveiled and why? "Media Vita!" I'm a big ol' nerd about liturgical music and I think it will sound AMAZING in Saint Mark's Cathedral.
Who would win in a sing off - Lady Gaga vs. Cher vs. Christina Aguilera? The millennial in me desperately wants to say Lady Gaga... But I think it would be Cher.
Passionate about any activities/groups/hobbies outside of SWC? My radical children's music band, Bicycle Face! We sing about everything from women's rights in the Victorian era to the pervasive misgendering of Schnauzers.
Adrienne McEntee ("No Time")
What’s your favorite song in Unveiled and why? "No Time." Aside from getting to sing a duet with lovely Amber, the concept of journeying home is very emotional to me.
Your best Halloween memory from childhood? Um, let me check on the statute of limitations before I answer. ☺
Why did you join SWC? After taking a hiatus in my 20s from school, church, and community choirs, I was excited to be part of a chorus again, and thrilled to find one with an LGBT bent.
Anne Wagner ("You Haven't Seen the Last of Me")
What’s your favorite song in Unveiled and why? "Til it happens to you." I found this song very cathartic and healing to sing with the Chorus. The song has an important message about injustice and having a voice.
Your best Halloween memory from childhood? My family used to dress up together in a particular theme. My favorite year was the Addams Family!
Why did you join SWC? I love to sing and I was looking for a community whose values align with mine. I was lucky, I found my musical home.
Kristin Holsather ("Everybody Rejoice")
Your best Halloween memory from childhood? My Dad dressed up like Mr. Clean (and he looked the spitting image) because he was freshly-bald from chemotherapy. I will never forget that Halloween, because it's a great example of my Dad's awesome humor he has in spite of hard times.
Why did you join SWC? To sing, sure, but really to meet women. And its worked out pretty well. I met my wife, Samantha, and I've never been happier.
Passionate about any activities/groups/hobbies outside of SWC? I play guitar and sing lead vocals in a rock band called Telesterion and I've performed as a Drag King several times around town, which has been so fun. I love traveling, hiking, and I love, love, love to cook (hiking and cooking are my stress relief).
